Hon. Barbara A. Kronlund -- A Brief Biography

The San Joaquin County Bar Association is proud to announce that the Hon. Barbara J. Kronlund has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Law Day Award. Judge Kronlund is a Superior Court Judge in San Joaquin County and began practicing law as a Deputy District Attorney in 1989. Since then, Judge Kronlund has served this community proudly and this award is well deserved.

After graduating from Pepperdine University in 1985 and obtaining her law degreefrom McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, in 1989, Judge Kronlund served as a legal intern and deputy district attorney in Sacramento County from 1987 to 1989. From 1990 to 1995, Judge Kronlund served as a deputy district attorney for San Joaquin County where she ultimately supervised the Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit.

In 1995, Deputy District Attorney Kronlund was appointed as a Court Commissioner, a position she held for nine and one-half (9½) years, handling both criminal and civil cases. On April 6, 2005, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Commissioner Kronlund to the bench. Initially, she served as a Superior Court Judge in the Juvenile Court, thereafter becoming presiding judge of the Juvenile Court. She now serves in a dedicated Civil Department handling civil cases.

As a member of the San Joaquin County Bar Association, she re-established the Women Lawyer Section and was Chair in 1999 and Vice-Chair in 2000.

She was a founder and initial President of the Consuelo M. Callahan, American Inn of Court. She is also the founder and presiding Judge over the Homeless Court of San Joaquin County. She was the founder and coordinator for the 2007 and 2009 Stand Down for Homeless Veteran’s Benefit Fair as well as Planning Chair for the upcoming 2010 Stand Down event. She is a member of the California Judge’s Association (CJA). She was a member of the Criminal Law and Procedure Committee from 1997 to 2005 and its Chair from 2002 to 2005. She has been a member of the CJA Judicial Ethics Committee from 2008 to the present and served as the Secretary of that committee.

She has been appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California to be a member of the Judicial Council Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee from 1999 to 2002; a member of the Judicial Council Access and Fairness Advisory Committee from 2000 to 2003 and was Vice-Chair from 2001 to 2003; a member of the Judicial Council Governing Committee of the Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER) from 2006 to the present.

She has been the Chair of the San Joaquin County Superior Court Education Committee from January 2008 to the present. She was instrumental in developing a statewide program entitled The Importance of an Impartial Judiciary which is currently being implemented as a joint project by the California Judge’s Association (CJA) and the California Center for Judicial Education and Research (CCJER) for statewide distribution.

She is a member of the Ethics Faculty for New Judge Orientation with the California Center for Judicial Education and Research. Judge Kronlund is teaching a mandatory ethics curriculum to judges as well.

Within the community she has been active and involved. She annually speaks in the Every Fifteen Minutes, Anti-Drunk Driving Program. Judge Kronlund acts as a Judge annually for the high school mock trial competition, law school mock trial and the national law school ethics mock trial program. She was a Board member of the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless from 1996 to 2004 and its President in 1997 and 1998. She served on the Child Abuse Prevention Council Board of Directors from 1994 to 2000.

Judge Kronlund has been very active with her family and childrens’ activities and has been married for the past 20 years to local attorney Michael Kronlund. They have two children, Christopher and Bethany.
